MIDI keyboard and computer?
I have a yamaha keyboard, MIDI in/out, a USB cable (midi in/out to the keyboard and usb inside the computer)
I want to record what I am playing.... not interested (yet) in special effects.... just recording what I am playing as a sound file into my computer.
A very simple, jargon free guide would be most welcome ![]()
Thanks is advance
You can do one of two things: record audio or record MIDI signal.
If you want to record audio, you can plug the headphone out of your keyboard into the line in of your computer's sound card. Audacity is a free multi tracking audio program that will record and save the audio file.
The other method is to record the pure MIDI signal, basically the instructions telling the computer what note to play, how long you played it, and how hard you struck it, among other things. This information can be applied to many "virtual instruments." Cakewalk Sonar and Propellerhead's Reason are two top notch MIDI sequencing programs that also differ in key features. They're expensive but I'm sure there's some more entry level MIDI virtual instrument software out there as well.
