How to convert 5mm x 16mm round head screws to standard size?
Hi there,
I've been frustrated with this problem. I lost the assembly screws needed to put together my keyboard stand. The only information I have is from the owner's manual ( http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi/english/port/dgx505_en.pdf ) that lists on pp93 the screws I need to get as "5 x 16mm round head screws." (I also need the screws described as 6mm x 30mm)
I went to my local hardware store (OSH) and tried to get some help. Of course, since all the screws are in standard, it was difficult to locate the correct screw. Also, most machine screws were described in multiple numbers that I could not decipher. No one could help.
Am I screwed or does someone have an answer?
There is hope for you. Unless they used specially shaped fasteners, it's a simple matter of finding what you need to fit.
You need a better hardware source. Many large cities have at least one supplier for screws and bolts of all kinds.
There are a VERY few occasions where Metric and SAE diameter and pitch are close enough to either almost fit but bind up or they fit somewhat loosely. Most of the time you won't get more than a few threads before it binds up, if it fits at all.
Home Depot usually has a fair selection of metric fasteners.
Be aware that both SAE (fractions of an inch for diameter, and threads per inch X length in inches or fractions) and metric (diameter in millimeters and threads per centimeter X millimeters in length) come in both fine and coarse thread pitches. They are not compatible with each other.
10-32 is 10/64" diameter by 32 threads per inch (National Fine Thread)
10-24 is 10/64" diameter by 24 threads per inch (National Coarse Thread)
1/4-28 is fine, 1/4-18 is coarse (1/4" diameter)
You need to use the same diameter and thread pitch that the manufacturer originally specified. The head type is usually not too critical.
IF you want to change the screws to SAE sizes, then you would have to ream or drill the holes up to a larger diameter and tap them to whatever thread you need. This is not for someone who isn't familiar with the procedure.
