How do you connect a keyboard (with a USB cable) to a computer, is there any free software to use MIDI?
I have a Yamaha PSR-E303, and a MIDI USB cable to connect them, but when I connect them, nothing happens, except a red light on my interface. Also, do you need to have special software to use MIDI, because the instructions that came with the cable said, open your music software program, e.g. Sonar, Cubase etc., but I don't have one of those - are there any free ones I could use?
hubis midi loopback device
you can route midi any way you like with this

it should work without it
for the computer to make a sound, you need a sequencer of some kind to record what you play, and a virtual instrument to make the noise (usually a vst plugin).
there is tons of free software that will do this
jescola buzz is the best free one but its hard to use
there is a microsoft one but its rubbish
renoise is awesome and costs about 50 quid
have a look here for free stuff

(mostly older stuff but a good resourse)

(lots of good free vst's and stuff here)
