Shredding on the yamaha shs-10 keytar

How do i set up midi with my keyboard?
okay heres the deal.
i have a yamaha YPT-310
i wanted to save the music i created, into my computer.
so i bought a cable where one end is a usb cord, and the other is two wires - midi in and midi out.
i plugged the usb cable into the usb port in the computer
and i plugged the two midi cables in the back of my keyboard.
heres where i get lost.
now that its all hooked up, idk what to do.
i have a bunch of programs to record with.
but i dont know how to send it from my keyboard to my computer!
i dont even know if its connected right.
someone please help me, its driving me crazy.
A MIDI connection does not transmit music, it transmit events, notes you press on your keyboard.
You need a midi sequencer to record your songs. Once recorded, you can modify the 'events' you have recorded in order to fix errors. Just like text processing.
You can find midi sequencers for free at download.com
