Student Teachers
The Student Teachers (1973) Trailer

Student Teachers
What was your first few days like when taking the student teachers course?

What were your ups and downs? How was it over all? Is there anything you would like to share about student teaching that would prepare me for that nervous day that is approaching?

The first day is very nerve wracking. But it wasn't as bad as when I had to start teaching. That was worse.

The first day was pretty easy when all was said and done. I just sat there while the teacher did all the work. I student taught for high school and it got a little boring because I listened to the same spiel over and over.

An important thing to do is pay attention when your Cooperating Teacher is explaining his/her rules and procedures. You are going to be responsible for enforcing these things very shortly, so make sure you know what is expected. Also, try and memorize the kids' names as soon as possible. That will impress your CT and your students. And it will make classroom management a lot easier. Kids always respond better to their names being said.

Another thing I did while learning the kids is names is just observed their personalities and who they interacted with. If you are teaching multiple classes, you can note the personalities of the different classes. This will help when planning lessons. If you have a really outgoing class, you will plan more group activities. Or, if you notice a few kids are kinesthetic learners, you will bring hands-on activities to your lessons.

So, to sum up, take a big breath, and take comfort in the fact that you only have one first day. It won't be as bad as you think it will be. Good luck!
