It's this simple: resort dining makes food taste better. The mountains, the clean air, the chill outside, the post ski buzz are ideal ingredients when it's time to indulge. Plus, resort dining puts you in touch with the nature you flew miles to experience. Whether riding a sleigh with a thick woolen blanket and a cup of hot cider in hand or stepping clumsily in snowshoes along a narrow trail, your spirit laughs and rises. Dining in yurts, remote mountain cabins, and far away snowfields offers ski resort guests a culinary experience unique to their vacation and one that will be just as memorable (if not more) than the face shots, the family snowball fight, and the steep couloir off the backside. Therefore, the best and most unique spots are the ones that cater to your sense of adventure and embellish its local habitat (Make reservations early! These special top spots have limited seating that book out quickly.)
5. The Yurt @ Solitude Ski Resort
A ¾-mile cross-country ski or snowshoe through a moon and lantern lit forest lead you to a Mongolian yurt. The small dome-shaped hut of wood and canvas glows with the boisterous sound of active diners. Inside, long picnic tables seat a crowd of 20. You will all soon be friends. Tibetan prayer flags hang from the insulated roof, black-and-white ski photos adorn the walls, and two chefs stand over large pots simmering on the free-standing stove. Savor your five-course meal that may include lobster crepes, pan-seared duck and Kalamata olive soup and drink plenty for that chilly path back to your car. Guests may bring their own corked wine and other drinks. Children under 12 are not allowed. $100/pp. Tues-Sun. (801) 536-5709 or (800) 748-4SKI (4754).
4. Park City Yurt at The Canyons
Take a moonlit sleigh ride (or sit in the back of a heated snowcat cab) straight to the Viking Yurt; or get dropped off at the Red Pine Lodge, then snowshoe or cross-country ski to your Mongolian dinner spot tucked in the woods of The Canyons Resort. Live music from the baby grand piano accompanies you as you feast on Kobe beef with wild mushrooms & ligonberry jus or pan seared sockeye salmon with an apricot glaze. The formal dining setup is so warm you won't want to leave after dessert. Guests can bring their own beverages. Children under 10 are not allowed. $110/pp nightly. (435) 615-YURT (9878).
3. Fireside Dining at Deer Valley Resort
Pretend you're in the European Alps as you stroll between four stone fireplaces gathering up hearty dishes like Swiss raclette cheese accompanied by potatoes, cured Italian and Swiss meats and freshly baked baguettes, simmering stews and fricassees, buttery potato rösti, and roasting leg of lamb with polenta or three onion risotto. The dessert fondue fireplace is a medal-winner in itself: dip strawberries, bananas, apples, dried apricots, cinnamon pound cake and almond biscotti into oozing chocolate, caramel and white chocolate Grand Marnier fondues. A horse-drawn sleigh awaits outside for those booking rides throughout dinner. You can also trek to dinner on snowshoes. Open Wed.-Fri., 6 - 9 p.m., Adults $52, Children $28 (11 years and younger). 435-645-6632.
2. Snowed Inn Sleigh Ride Dinner at Park City Mountain Resort
Hop into the horse-drawn sleigh for a 30-minute ride from the base of the resort. Dinner is optional but if you're visiting with family, don't opt out. The two and half hour evening is filled with kitschy country music and banter and chuckwagon-esque food like chili, prime rib, Utah trout, mashers and apple cobbler. The kids will love it. Three seatings nightly, $79/adults, $49/kids. Sleigh ride only, $20/pp. (866) 647-3310.
1. Shallow Shaft Restaurant in Little Cottonwood Canyon
Understated yet impeccably Alta, the Shaft defies its steakhouse stereotype. Sure, funky ski memorabilia line the interior and pizza is on the menu but beyond that you'll find a gourmet food lover's paradise. The menu features "regional mountain cuisine" from local, organic producers where possible. Entrees like the 10 oz. hand-cut rib eye, potato-wrapped King wild salmon, and double cut pork chop embody the rugged mountain essence of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Make sure you reserve enough energy after skiing for the steep, creaky staircase to the restaurant's entrance. The views of Alta are worth every step. They also make their own ice cream! Open nightly. (801) 742-2177.
