Piano/keyboard?
I am taking piano lessons, but I do not want to buy a standart acoustic piano (too heavy etc.) What keyboard has the same features as a piano with dynamics and pedal? What should I buy?
In short, the Yamaha YPT 300. This is the best cheap keyboard that you can buy. However, it has only 61 keys (considerably less than a real piano) The peddle must be purchased separately, as well as the stand. This costs around $100-$150 (US currency).
For a 76-key keyboard (still smaller than full-size), you can buy a Yamaha DGX 205. Peddle and stand are also sold separately.
For a full size keyboard, I have a Yamaha DGX505. This comes with a great stand, but the peddle is sold separately.
Important characteristics:
Touch-sensitive: if a keyboard is touch sensitive, then the sound will be louder if you press the key harder. This also has an effect on the harmonics of the note, which reflects the case with a real piano.
Size: Keyboards come is 61-key, 76-key, and full size form. The smaller keyboards are cheaper. The great majority of songs can be played on a 61-key keyboard. I know of few songs that cannot be played on a 76-key keyboard.
Feel: All keyboards feel different than real pianos. Because of the complicated mechanisms attached to real piano keys, it is very expensive to duplicate the feel of a real piano.
Quality: In general, the quality of sound increases as price increases. Even a $500 keyboard will not sound quite as good as a real piano. If you want to come very close, you can buy a "stage keyboard" or "stage piano", which will cost $1000 or more. These are used by professional musicians when performing live (hence the "stage").
If you want to go all out, buy a Yamaha Clavinova. This is the top of the line of electric pianos. It will cost several thousand dollars. These, however, are heavy - they are furniture as well as an instrument.
