Does switching from analogue sound cables to optical/coax make a huge noticeable difference in sound quality ?
i have the z-680 digital speakers which is connected to my computer atm via analogue cables but i plan to connect a coax with the PC to the z-680 amp and optical from ps3 to z-680 amp .
In the past i did connect my friends optical cables with z-680 amp to my PC but i didn't hear a difference in normal mp3 music on winamp and windows media player it just sounded like normal does with the analouge cables and also i wasn't able get full 5.1 surround sound but only 4channel to work(front 2 and rear2 no center) But with the analouge cables the whole 5.1 works fine for some reason =p , is it because what ever i listen to has to support dolby digital ? such as dvd movies, games & etc? because i didn't get a chance to test that out yet .
But can someone please answer my questions that would be great =] and also the issue with the 4 speakers instead of 5.1 =/ issue did any one get that problem ?
thanks
Okedoke.... Hope this helps.
Yes and No.
Yes, you should change the cables. No, you wont hear any better "quality" of sound. You really wont hear any better quality untill you drop some major coin on a good system. What you have is a "System in a box". These are good quality but not great. They are built for the masses and to hit a price point. Quality is secondary.
You have a surround sound system. 5.1. That means you have the "Ability" to play Surround sound from DVDs, games and so on. You can only do this if you are sending it a surround sound signal. This is not going to happen with your analog connection. You said you can hear 5.1 with the analog. What i suspect you are hearing is a 5 channel stereo. The system is taking the left and right and sending it to multiple speakers to give you the illusion of 5.1. True 5.1 needs to have a digital signal. you can get analog 5.1 but you would have to have 5 different connections per devise. and since this is a "system in a box" i doubt it has the connections required to do that.
Keep in mind, that some people dont like surround sound as most of the time you really aren't hearing anything in the rear speakers. People assume its not working, cause not all the speakers are going. With surround sound decoding there may not be anything on those channels. IE. a CD has only 2 channels, left and right. In a surround sound system that means that only the left and right speaker will fire. Most of a movie is played thru the left right and center.
So to sum up, you should use the digital cable. Dont be surprised when not all the speakers dont always turn on. They are only going to play when theres something to play.
What i would do is use the analog connection for Computers or CDs that you would want all speakers to fire and use the digital connections for DVDs and TV. Things that actually have surround sound to decode.
