How do I set up my Midi keyboard to my computer?

I have a midi to USB cable for my computer, but none of my audio programs will let me record with the keyboard. I've tried this with programs such as sony acid, fl studio, and acoustica mixcraft, and the keyboard will not record on any of these programs! I have the cables connected correctly from the midi in and midi out on my keyboard, directly to the usb port on my computer. What's wierd is that my computer, and the music programs, can detect the keyboard, but when i press record, it doesn't make a sound through my computer speakers when I play with it... I have no idea what to do. My keyboard is a Yamaha S03. Thank you.
So do I set up both the midi in and midi out preferences on my audio software to my usb midi cable port? and what do monitor settings mean?

MIDI cables transmit data, not audio. From your description, to hear sound while you play you'd either have to have the track set to play the general MIDI sounds from your sound card or a synth plug-in (VST or DXi). Check your MIDI output devices.
