How to remove the handle from a Kohler single handle shower valve?
I am having an issue with my shower and need access to the shower valve. I removed the two screws holding the escutcheon on but I am unable to get the handle off so I can remove the escutcheon and access the guts of the valve. The handle is not the knob type where I can pry off a cap and unscrew. Its the type where the handle points to the floor when off. There is a screw hole on the underside of the handle, but there wasn't a screw in it when I began this nightmare. I can see the threads, so I don't think there is a screw deep in there I can't see. The handle will wiggle a little bit, but I'm unable to remove it. Any help would be appreciated.
c is right. There is no real possible way that handle set in place, without falling off. What you're seeing in there couldn't be thread, primarily due to the fact that the set screw would be securing itself to a flat area of the stem, not a threaded area. The set screw size, or allen wrench size will be between 1/16" to 1/8". Just try to get the allen wrench to grab onto the set screw for proper removal. Keep in mind, the reason why the handle is loose the way you explained, is more than likely due to the set screw slightly loose. Also, if this Kohler valve happens to be one of the larger ones with the stainless steel screws securing the face plate on, be very careful to mark top & bottom with a sharpie or of equal & be careful not to let any of the black rubber bushings fall off & get debris on them...They're very sensitive & must stay clean. Purchase yourself some plumber's grease when assembling the new valve...It will make a huge difference on it's motion. I wish you the very best of luck on this project...
