Music Theory on Guitar? 10 Points!!!?
Ok, I'm starting my first class of music theory sometime around october, anyway, I'm 15 and I'm a guitarist (beginner). Whenever I look on the internet for some lessons on guitar I get lost very quickly because they use these terms that I have no idea what they mean. I hardly know any terms or anything about the guitar except for the chords A, B, C, D, E, F, G and pieces of John Mayer songs. I want to know if Music Theory will help me understand the guitar allot better and help me get the hang of things.
In music theory, you will learn about chord structure, qualities, and progressions. You will also learn a lot of other stuff, but the chord knowledge is invaluable to the guitarist. So, yeah it'll help you. A lot of common scales to play on guitar are different modes which you will learn about in theory (Major and Minor are modes, they are Ionian and Aeolian respectively, but i've learned Phrygian scales on the guitar, so it will probably be in your best interest to learn all seven) I had this awesome guitarist in my music history class (don't know his age, but was a sophomore last year), and he had taken music theory classes and said they helped him with is guitar playing (and he also writes guitar music) So, yes, music theory will be very beneficial to you. Good luck with the class, it's enjoyable if you find you like the material, but if you are not serious about it, it can become really difficult for you.
